I2- BUFFY-HEADED MARMOSET

BUFFY-HEADED MARMOSET

Description

Buffy-headed marmosets share many characteristics with other monkeys in South America. They have long tails and downward-flaring nostrils. They are among the world's smallest primates. If you see one of them, you can distinguish it from other marmosets because they have white tufts of hair that flare horizontally from the sides of the head, and a face that is mostly white aside from darker hair immediately surrounding the eyes and nose. Additionally, they are darker in general coloration, with the dorsal side being darker than the ventral side, and the tail possessing alternating bands of black and lighter colored hair. They have non-opposable thumbs and their nails are similar to claws. Males and females are similar in size, too. They are very small.

Habitat

The Buffy-headed Marmoset is found in what lasted of Atlantic Rain Forest. It is originally from the Atlantic rain forests of southeastern Brazil. It is found at altitudes greater than 400 meters. You will see these marmosets in the Brazilian states of Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais.
Threats

Buffy-headed marmosets are in the red list of endangered species in Brazil. They may disappear if men keep on littering our forests, if we fell the rest of the beautiful Atlantic rain forest.

Conservation Efforts

The main threat to this marmoset species is the destruction of its habitat, the Atlantic Rain forest. There won´t be good areas of the forest for them and their number might decline in at least 20% in the next five years. If unscrupulous hunters catch these primates for the exotic pet trade, this will happen very soon. There might not be much of this kind of trade if people don´t buy those animals. It´s a matter of conscience. It should be noted that buffy-headed marmosets are the rarest of all marmoset species.
